POMIS IQ
The prospect of signigicant competitive strategy restructuring in the POMIS industry will serve up many more deal possibilities than before.

The nation's healthcare system is undergoing a transformation in an effort to improve quality, safety and efficiency of care from the upgrade to ICD-10 to information exchanges of EHR technology. The Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs are designed to support providers in this period of transition, but the impact of this historic change on both providers and patients will stretch far beyond the duration of these programs.

The Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs provide a financial reward for the meaningful use of qualified, certified EHRs to achieve health and efficiency goals. By implementing and meaningfully using an EHR system, providers will reap benefits beyond financial incentives - like reduction in errors, availability of records and data, reminders and alerts, clinical decision support and e-Prescribing/refill automation.

On July 13, 2010, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a Final Rule establishing the criteria with which eligible professionals and hospitals must comply in order to qualify for the more than $25.0 billion incentive payments that are available to clinicians through the American Recovery and Reimbursement Act.  Providers are not required to begin participating in the incentive program in 2011; however, providers must begin receiving payments no later than 2016.

Vendors have seen more acquisition opportunities in the POMIS industry than ever before.  Small and mid-sized companies that could not penetrate the funding market can now more realistically consider several business transactions: get acquired by larger firms with business plans with investors or partner with several smaller firms to gain some market strength.

In the past, acquisitions and mergers have been led by the like of McKesson Corporation, Allscripts, Inc., Cerner Corporation, Sage Software, GE Healthcare, NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, etc.  Today, there are opportunities for smaller vendors such as athenahealth, Inc., AdvancedMD Software, MedPlexus Corporation, and the like.

Demand is fueled by the U.S. Healthcare Reform movement for Medicare and Medicaid, which is driving greater adoption of information technology into provider organizations, especially the ambulatory care sector.
